Saudi Arabia has cancelled the 2026 edition of its flagship investment forum — the event widely known as “Davos in the Desert” — amid Houthi attacks.
A cancelled conference is a modest event in itself. What makes it worth reporting is that this particular conference exists to make an argument, and cancelling it concedes the opposite one.

What the forum is for
The event was built as a showcase: an annual gathering at which global asset managers, bank chiefs and technology executives appear on stage in Riyadh and, by appearing, signal that the kingdom is a normal place to deploy capital. Its value is almost entirely reputational, which is precisely why calling it off carries weight.
Economic diversification away from oil depends on persuading foreign investors and foreign staff to commit to long-dated projects inside Saudi Arabia. That argument is difficult to make in a year when the security environment prevents the country from hosting its own investors.
The practical reasons, which are less about optics
There are concrete mechanics behind a decision like this, and they tend to be left out of the coverage.
Gatherings of this kind concentrate several thousand people, including heads of state and chief executives, in a small number of venues on a published schedule. Protecting that against aerial attack is a different proposition from protecting infrastructure, and the duty of care owed to attending delegations sits with multiple governments at once.
Aviation is the harder constraint. Corporate and government aircraft need insurance to fly into a destination, and war-risk cover for airports under missile and drone threat is withdrawn or repriced quickly. Delegations cancel not because they judge the risk unacceptable but because their carriers and insurers do it for them. The United States has separately issued warnings regarding Saudi airports.

What it indicates
Saudi Arabia has spent the regional conflict attempting to stay outside it while remaining a party to its diplomacy. A cancellation of this visibility is an admission that the attempt is no longer costless, and it is a more reliable indicator of how the kingdom assesses its own exposure than any official statement about confidence.
Whether the forum returns next year, and whether attendance recovers if it does, will say more than this year’s cancellation does.
