🔎 Stories nobody else is covering
This is the part of the postbag we care most about. If something is happening where you are and no one is reporting it — a decision by a local authority, a workplace, an institution, a pattern people around you have noticed and no journalist has written down — we want to hear about it, even if you are not sure it is a story.
What helps
Specifics travel further than outrage. Dates, places, the names of the organisations involved, and anything written down — a letter, a decision, a notice, an invoice, a photograph with the time it was taken. If you have documents, say so in your message and we will arrange a way for you to send them.
What happens after you write to us
We read everything and we reply either way, normally within two weeks. If we take the story forward, we check it before anything is published: that means going back to the people and institutions involved, looking at whatever paperwork exists, and asking you follow-up questions. That work takes time, and it is the reason we can stand behind what we print.
If your account concerns a named person, company or public body, we contact them for their response before we publish. We do this in every case. It is not a sign that we disbelieve you — it is what makes the story stand up.
Your name
Tell us if you do not want to be named, and we will not name you. We will always tell you before publication how you would be described.
One honest warning: this is an ordinary web form, not a secure channel. Your message travels over the internet and sits in an email inbox. If you are somewhere that being identified could put you in danger, do not send us anything from a work device or an account connected to your real name, and think carefully about details that would identify you even without your name attached — a job title, a date, a place.
What we cannot publish
Sometimes a story is true and we still cannot print it as fact. If the only evidence is one person’s recollection and the person accused denies it, we have two options: publish it as your account, clearly attributed to you, or not publish it. We will not present a contested claim as an established one, however convinced we are.
We also cannot help with matters that belong in front of a lawyer, a regulator or the police. If that is where your problem sits, we will say so.
