Qatar says talks between Iran and the United States are continuing, and has warned of the risk of a broader regional conflict. President Trump has said the United States is still striking Iran, and praised Russia for not assisting it.
Those statements are not in contradiction, and holding them together is the whole of the current situation: negotiation and bombardment are running at the same time.

Why Qatar is the one saying this
Qatar has spent two decades building a specific diplomatic position: a small state that keeps working channels to parties who will not speak to each other directly. It has hosted talks involving the United States, Iran, the Taliban, Hamas and others, and it has done so while hosting a major American military presence.
That gives a Qatari statement about whether talks are alive more informational value than the same statement from either party. Washington and Tehran both have reasons to misrepresent the state of negotiations — to reassure domestic audiences, or to apply pressure. An intermediary’s standing depends on being believed by both sides, which is a constraint on how far it can spin.
It also has an obvious interest. Qatar shares the world’s largest gas field with Iran and sits within easy reach of any escalation. A wider war is not an abstraction for Doha, and a warning about one is partly a warning on its own behalf.
“Talks are ongoing” covers a wide range
The phrase is worth unpacking, because it is used to describe very different things: messages passed through a third party, technical discussions between officials, or direct negotiation with authority to settle. The first can continue indefinitely without producing anything.
Nothing in the available reporting establishes which of these is happening. What can be said is that a channel exists and that a credible intermediary is confirming it — which is more than could be said during several earlier phases of this conflict.

The Russia remark
Praise for Moscow for not assisting Iran is a notable detail. Russia and Iran have deepened military cooperation over the course of the war in Ukraine, and an American president publicly thanking Russia for restraint suggests that cooperation is being read in Washington as a variable rather than a fixed alignment.
Whether that reflects an actual understanding or an attempt to create one by asserting it is not something that can be determined from the remark.
