South Australia’s koala population has grown large enough that researchers warn it may be heading toward a self-made disaster, with forests unable to support the animals living in them. The proposed response is targeted fertility control, to prevent widespread starvation and habitat collapse. It is one of the most uncomfortable problems in animal welfare, because every available option is bad.

How a threatened species becomes an overabundant one

Koalas are in serious trouble across much of eastern Australia, from habitat loss, disease and fire. In parts of South Australia the situation is close to inverted, and the explanation is history rather than paradox.

Koalas were introduced to islands and isolated areas as insurance populations, in places without the predators, competitors or diseases that regulate numbers on the mainland. Populations in such settings can grow rapidly, and the constraint they eventually meet is not a predator but the food supply itself.

Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves and are highly selective about which species. Heavy browsing defoliates preferred trees, and a eucalypt stripped repeatedly does not simply regrow — it can die. The population then loses the resource that sustains it, and the crash that follows is by starvation.

Why doing nothing is also a decision

The instinctive response — leave wildlife alone and let nature take its course — is a defensible position and it has a specific cost here.

Starvation in a browsing mammal is slow. Animals decline over weeks, and the young and the pregnant die first. A population crash also takes the forest with it, which affects every other species dependent on those trees, and the habitat may not recover on any human timescale. Ecologists who work on overabundance make the point that “letting nature take its course” is not available in a place where the population was put there by people, in an environment altered by people, with the regulating factors removed by people.

The options, and what each costs

  • Fertility control. Sterilisation or contraceptive implants. No animal is killed, which is why welfare organisations generally prefer it. It requires catching and handling large numbers of animals, which is stressful and labour-intensive, and it works slowly — existing animals still eat while the birth rate falls.
  • Translocation. Moving animals elsewhere. Popular with the public, and poorly supported by evidence: mortality after release is often high, and suitable unoccupied habitat is scarce.
  • Culling. Fast and effective at reducing browsing pressure. Politically impossible for an animal of this profile, and rejected outright by most Australians.
  • Habitat expansion. The genuine long-term answer, and the slowest — eucalypts take decades.

Researchers proposing targeted fertility control are generally arguing that it is the least-bad option available in time, not that it is a good one.

The wider point

Cases like this cut across the usual framing of animal welfare, in which the harm has a perpetrator. Here nobody is being cruel. The animals are protected, admired and well-regarded, and they are heading toward mass starvation precisely because past interventions succeeded.

It also illustrates why welfare and conservation are not the same discipline. Conservation counts populations and species; welfare counts the experience of individual animals. A population that is thriving on paper can consist of animals in poor condition, and a measure that is good for the forest may be experienced as harm by every animal handled to achieve it. Reasonable people weight those differently, and this is one of the cases where the difference cannot be papered over.
