Cuba has reported a partial collapse of its national power grid, leaving western provinces without electricity after transmission lines failed between Matanzas and Pinar del Río.
The phrase “partial collapse” is doing real work there, and it is worth unpacking.

Why a grid fails all at once
An electricity network has to keep supply and demand matched continuously. When a major transmission line fails, the power it was carrying has to go somewhere else instantly — and if the remaining lines cannot take it, they trip too.
Protective systems then disconnect sections deliberately, to stop the failure spreading and to prevent damage to generating equipment. That is what turns one broken link into a region without power within seconds.
Restoring it is slower than losing it. Generating stations cannot simply be switched back on together; the network has to be rebuilt in stages, section by section, keeping supply and demand balanced at each step.
Why Cuba is vulnerable
Cuba’s grid has suffered repeated failures in recent years. The underlying causes are consistent: ageing generating plant, difficulty importing spare parts and fuel, and limited capacity to carry out major maintenance.
Being an island compounds it. A country connected to neighbours can import electricity when its own supply fails. Cuba cannot. What it generates is what it has.
What it means on the ground
In a Caribbean summer, losing power means losing refrigeration for food and medicine, water pumping in buildings that rely on it, and any cooling at all.
Hospitals typically hold emergency generators, which depend on fuel that is itself in short supply. The effects accumulate quietly rather than dramatically — and they fall hardest on those least able to buy their way around them.
