It is one of the most frequently repeated arguments in the climate debate: the climate has always changed, current warming is natural, humans are not to blame. The claim resurfaces in comment threads, opinion columns and the occasional political speech, and it sounds reasonable enough that it is worth taking apart carefully rather than dismissing.

The first part is true. The second and third are not.

The true part

Earth’s climate has changed enormously over its 4.5-billion-year history. Ice ages have come and gone on cycles driven by wobbles in the planet’s orbit. Continental positions have shifted, ocean currents have reorganised, volcanic eruptions have cooled the atmosphere for years at a time, and the composition of the atmosphere itself has changed dramatically since life first began altering it around three billion years ago.

No climate scientist disputes any of this. Reconstructing past climate is a substantial branch of the discipline — paleoclimatology — and its findings are precisely what allows current change to be put in context.

Why “natural” doesn’t follow

The logical error in the claim is straightforward. That climate has changed for many reasons in the past does not mean it must be changing for those same reasons now. Fires can be caused by lightning; that does not mean a specific fire in a specific house was not caused by an unattended candle.

Every previous climate change has a physical cause that scientists can identify and measure — orbital shifts, solar variations, volcanic activity, tectonic movement, changes in albedo. Attributing current change requires checking whether any of those forcings can account for what is observed. They cannot. The current warming is happening far faster than orbital cycles produce, solar output has been broadly flat while temperatures have climbed, and no unusual volcanic or tectonic activity has occurred.

What has changed is atmospheric composition. Carbon dioxide levels are now around 425 parts per million, up from roughly 280 ppm at the start of the industrial revolution and higher than at any point in the past three million years. The isotopic signature of that additional carbon dioxide identifies it unambiguously as coming from burning fossil fuels — it has the specific carbon-13 to carbon-12 ratio characteristic of ancient plant matter, and is depleted in carbon-14, which decays over tens of thousands of years.

In other words: we know how much extra CO₂ is in the atmosphere, we know where it came from, we know how it traps heat (the physics has been understood since the nineteenth century), and we can measure the resulting warming.

The speed argument

The strongest single response to “the climate has always changed” is: not this fast. Ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica allow atmospheric composition and temperature to be reconstructed with high precision back several hundred thousand years. The transitions between ice ages and warm periods that natural forcings drive typically take thousands of years.

The current change is a similar magnitude compressed into roughly 150 years. That difference in speed is the reason ecosystems that adapted comfortably to previous cycles are now stressed: species that could migrate as climate zones shifted over millennia cannot migrate at the current rate, coral reefs that recovered between bleaching events centuries apart cannot recover between events years apart, and human infrastructure built for the climate of the twentieth century is now meeting the climate of the twenty-first.

What convinces scientists

Multiple independent lines of evidence, each of which would be sufficient on its own and which point in the same direction: temperature records from weather stations and satellites, ocean heat content, glacier retreat, sea level rise, sea ice loss, plant flowering and animal migration timing shifts, isotopic analysis of atmospheric CO₂, and detailed physical models that reproduce the observed warming when human emissions are included and do not reproduce it when they are removed.

The scientific consensus is not consensus in the sense of a vote. It is consensus in the sense that every major national scientific academy, every meteorological agency and every relevant international body has independently reached the same conclusion by examining the evidence.

Why the argument keeps working

“The climate has always changed” persists because it contains a true statement joined to a false inference by a hidden logical leap. That structure is common in effective misinformation — it means anyone who tries to argue against it appears to be denying the true part, and anyone who accepts the true part appears to concede the false inference.

The correct response is to accept the true part explicitly, and then explain why it does not imply the conclusion. Which is what this piece has tried to do. The fourth global coral bleaching event, the Po at historic lows, and monsoons that keep getting deadlier are what natural variability looks like when a physical forcing not present in any previous era is added to it.
