A study tracking twelve people through ten months in Antarctica has produced a finding that space agencies did not particularly want: the difficulty of long isolation may not be loneliness so much as the opposite.

Researchers reported that frequent contact between crew members was associated with greater tension and mistrust, and that the group increasingly divided along cultural and language lines.

Why Antarctica stands in for Mars

Research stations on the Antarctic plateau are used as analogues for spaceflight because they reproduce several conditions that are otherwise hard to study on Earth.

A small crew lives in a sealed structure for months. During the winter, no aircraft can reach them — a genuine impossibility of rescue rather than a simulated one. Stations on the high plateau sit above 3,000 metres, so residents live in mild oxygen deprivation. There is prolonged darkness, extreme cold outside, and a fixed group of people who cannot be avoided.

The European Space Agency has run medical and psychological research at Concordia station on exactly this basis for years.

What the study reported

The headline result is counterintuitive. It is reasonable to assume that people cut off from the world would draw closer together, and that more contact between them would help.

The researchers found the association ran the other way: more frequent interaction went with more tension and less trust, and subgroups formed around shared culture and language.

It is worth being careful about what that does and does not establish. This is a study of twelve people. An association between two things measured in the same group does not show which caused which — it is equally possible that crew members who were already in conflict interacted more, rather than that interaction produced the conflict.

Findings from very small groups also may not generalise. A different twelve people might behave differently.

Why it matters for a Mars mission

A crewed mission to Mars would involve a small group confined together for something on the order of two to three years, depending on the trajectory chosen.

One feature of that journey has no equivalent on Earth. As the distance grows, radio signals take up to around twenty minutes each way, which makes conversation impossible — messages can be sent, but not exchanged. Ground control cannot talk a crisis down in real time, and a crew in difficulty is genuinely on its own in a way an Antarctic station is not.

The engineering problems of getting to Mars are widely discussed. Whether a handful of people can live together for three years without the group breaking down is a less glamorous question, and space agencies have consistently identified it as one of the harder ones.

The practical implication

If the finding holds, the design conclusion is not to force crews together but to give them somewhere to be apart — private space, and the ability to withdraw without that being read as hostility.

That runs against the pressure of spacecraft design, where every cubic metre carries a mass and fuel cost, and private space is the first thing sacrificed.

The observation about cultural and language grouping points somewhere similar for crew selection, which is currently a matter of active debate in the field rather than a settled science.

Not only about astronauts

Isolation studies have applications a long way from spaceflight — submarine crews, remote mining and drilling operations, ships on long voyages, and the conditions many people experienced during pandemic lockdowns.

The suggestion emerging from this line of research is that “keeping people connected” is not automatically the right prescription for confinement, and that the ability to be alone may matter as much as the ability to be together. On the current evidence that remains a hypothesis worth testing, not a conclusion.
