What is known

The shooting took place at a government building in Nonthaburi, a densely populated province adjoining the Thai capital. One person died and one was seriously hurt. A former parliamentarian is in police custody.

Being taken into custody is not a charge, and a charge is not a conviction. What a suspect is said to have done in the hours after an incident frequently differs from what prosecutors later allege, and from what a court eventually finds.

What is not yet known

No motive has been established. The relationship, if any, between the person in custody and those shot has not been confirmed publicly. Nor has any account of what happened inside the building been independently verified.

We are not going to fill those gaps with speculation. In the early hours after a violent incident, the pressure to explain usually outruns the available facts, and explanations offered at that stage are often wrong.

This is the second reported shooting in Nonthaburi province that we have covered in recent days, following an incident at a school there. Whether there is any connection between them is unknown, and assuming one would be a mistake.

What happens next

Thai police will investigate and prosecutors will decide whether to bring charges. Where a public figure is involved, proceedings tend to attract heavy domestic coverage, which is not the same as producing reliable early information.

We will report developments as they are confirmed by police, prosecutors or the courts.
